India’s entry into Anthropic’s roadmap not only boosts its global presence but also positions the company to play a leading role in shaping the future of AI innovation across Asia.
Artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic, the company behind the fast-growing Claude AI chatbot, is preparing to make its entry into India’s booming AI market as part of a global expansion strategy. The move highlights India’s growing role in the worldwide AI adoption wave, especially as rivals like OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Meta ramp up their presence in the country.
Anthropic’s Growth and Global Strategy
Anthropic has rapidly become one of the most valuable AI startups in the world, recently raising $13 billion in fresh funding at a $183 billion post-money valuation, led by Iconiq Capital. The company announced plans to triple its international workforce and expand its applied AI division fivefold in 2025 to meet the rising demand for generative AI solutions across industries.
According to the company’s Economic Index Report, Anthropic’s customer base has grown from fewer than 1,000 businesses in 2023 to over 300,000 business customers globally in 2025. Revenue growth has been equally explosive, jumping from $87 million in early 2024 to $5 billion by August 2025. This surge reflects the increasing adoption of Claude AI in sectors such as finance, healthcare, retail, and enterprise technology.
India’s Rising Importance in AI Adoption
India is emerging as a key market for AI chatbots, with Anthropic reporting that the country already accounts for 7.2% of global Claude AI usage, the largest outside the United States. While overall usage is still low on a per-capita basis, India’s massive population and fast-growing digital economy make it a priority market for expansion.
Anthropic is currently hiring for a Country Lead for India, along with positions in Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Singapore, signaling its focus on scaling operations in Asia-Pacific. This comes just weeks after OpenAI announced its first India office in New Delhi, underlining the country’s rising strategic importance in the global AI race.
Competing in a Crowded AI Landscape
With nearly 80% of Claude AI’s consumer usage coming from outside the U.S., Anthropic faces tough competition as tech giants like Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot, and Meta’s AI assistants expand aggressively. By entering India, Anthropic aims to strengthen its foothold in the enterprise AI solutions market and capture growing demand for generative AI-powered applications in one of the world’s largest technology ecosystems.
