Questions have been raised against Apple’s honesty for a second time. Finnish holding firm MPH Technologies has filed a federal court lawsuit accusing Apple of illegally using patented secure messaging technology across a range of its products.
According to the lawsuit, Apple used MPH Technologies' intellectual property relating to send and forward messages. They had eight patents detailing various technologies, including VPN and end-to-end encryption, for establishing secured communication and all have been infringed by Apple. The handset giant has been alleged to illegally deploy the technology into iMessage, FaceTime, and always-on VPN services.
MPH witnessed this in 2016 and decided to contact them for a potential licensing agreement. But Apple denied this and sent a letter in 2017 saying it didn't believe a licence was required, as the asserted patents were not infringed and/or invalid.
MPH took the case to the US District Court for the Northern District of California and demanded an undetermined sum as compensation for infringement from Apple. Also, they want an injunction against Apple, prohibiting them from using its patented encryption tech in the future.
