Apple has officially turned to Google to accelerate its long-awaited AI overhaul of Siri, announcing a multi-year partnership that will see Google’s Gemini models power key Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri expected later this year.
In a rare joint statement, Apple and Google confirmed that Apple’s next generation of Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini AI and cloud technology. Apple acknowledged that, after internal evaluation, Google’s AI currently offers the most capable foundation to deliver advanced generative AI experiences. Despite the collaboration, Apple emphasized that Apple Intelligence will continue to run on-device and through its Private Cloud Compute, maintaining its privacy-first approach.
The move follows months of speculation that Apple was struggling to bring its AI-powered Siri to market. First unveiled at WWDC 2024, the upgraded Siri was originally slated for 2025 but faced delays, with Apple later targeting spring 2026. Meanwhile, rivals such as Google with Gemini and Amazon with Alexa+ have surged ahead with rapid AI deployments.
For iPhone users, the partnership promises a much-needed leap in Siri’s intelligence and usefulness. However, questions remain around launch timelines and how Gemini-powered Siri will coexist with Apple’s existing ChatGPT integration—underscoring just how pivotal this AI reset is for Apple.
