Xinhuanet plans to invest more than 1.1 billion yuan ($162 million) in an AI agent designed to help users study, research and disseminate the political ideology of Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to stock exchange filings.
The project, called Xinhua Yudian, will be developed by Xinhuanet, which is owned by China's official state news agency, Xinhua News Agency.
The company described the initiative as an intelligent agent focused on learning and promoting "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era," the political doctrine that has become central to Chinese policymaking and governance.
According to the filing, the AI system will provide users with political and current affairs information while helping them navigate what the company described as information overload and difficulties distinguishing accurate information from misinformation.
The announcement highlights how China is increasingly incorporating artificial intelligence into state communication and ideological education efforts.
The initiative follows Beijing's broader "AI+" strategy launched earlier this year, which seeks to accelerate AI adoption across industries and public services while ensuring the technology aligns with state priorities.
Xinhuanet said the AI agent will be built using a state-controlled content repository and will serve as an authoritative source for interpreting Xi's speeches, writings and policy positions.
One of its intended uses will be helping government officials, researchers and other users verify references to Xi's statements in official documents and policy materials, reducing the risk of inaccuracies in politically sensitive communications.
The project builds on China's earlier efforts to use technology to expand the reach of official ideology. In 2019, authorities launched the "Xuexi Qiangguo" mobile application, which encouraged citizens to study government policies and Xi's speeches and quickly became one of China's most downloaded apps.
The latest initiative reflects a broader trend in which governments worldwide are exploring AI-powered systems for information dissemination, public services and citizen engagement. However, China's approach is distinctive in explicitly positioning AI as a tool for promoting official ideology and strengthening state messaging.
For the technology industry, the project also demonstrates how agentic AI is expanding beyond enterprise productivity and consumer applications into areas such as public communication, education and government information services.
