To develop a better enforcement ecosystem and to protect the interests of IP owners in India, CII has been driving two major initiatives Training & Capacity development programmes for enforcement bodies and International Conference on Anti-Counterfeiting and Anti-Piracy.
The objective of the conference is to join hands with groups and associations which have been advocating "respect for IP" and have been making a consistent effort to curb the menace of counterfeiting and piracy across the world.
The International Conference on Anti-Counterfeiting and Anti-Piracy aims at designing concerted action and enhancing public awareness. It explores: 1) Connecting the dots between supply and demand, 2) Looking for technology solutions, 3) Operational enforcement activities as a result of customs capacity building, 4) Building capacity to combat transnational organized crime, and 5) Building public-private partnerships and other self-regulatory mechanisms.
N. N. Prasad, Executive Director & Chief of Staff, World Intellectual Property Organization, Geneva, mentioned that each and every country has a responsibility to tackle the problem of counterferfeiting and piracy in an effective and coordinated manner.
Against this backdrop, it is extremely important and vital for India to further strengthen its resolve to deal with the menace of counterfeiting and piracy with determination.
Chief Commissioner of Central Excise & Customs at Pune, Sanjeev Behari mentioned that the Customs Department has taken a number of initiatives on the enforcement of IP. In fact, in the year 2012-13 alone there have been around 96 cases of seizures in IP. He further expressed his interest to organize a session on IPR for his custom officials.
The conference saw participation of around 150 delegates.
