To safeguard consumers and businesses from telecom fraud, the DoT is collaborating with telecom operators and cybersecurity experts to enhance detection and mitigation measures.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a strict warning against mobile number spoofing, IP spoofing, IMEI tampering, and SMS header manipulation, labeling them as illegal mobile practices under Indian telecommunication laws. Such activities violate the Telecommunications Act, 2023, and pose significant risks, including telecom fraud, cybercrime, and national security threats.
The Rising Threat of Telecom Fraud
Cybercriminals are increasingly using mobile number spoofing and IP spoofing to disguise their identities, impersonate legitimate users, and execute fraud schemes. By manipulating Calling Line Identity (CLI)—commonly referred to as a phone number—scammers can send deceptive messages, conduct phishing attacks, and exploit unsuspecting individuals.
Similarly, IMEI tampering has become a major concern, allowing criminals to alter device identities and bypass security checks. The IMEI regulation framework aims to prevent unauthorized modifications and ensure compliance with government tracking and monitoring policies.
Legal Consequences and DoT’s Crackdown
The Telecommunications Act, 2023, strictly prohibits mobile number spoofing, IMEI tampering, and unauthorized manipulation of telecom identifiers. Offenders found guilty of these illegal mobile practices face severe penalties, including hefty fines and imprisonment. The DoT has reinforced its commitment to combating telecom fraud by deploying advanced security solutions and strengthening monitoring mechanisms.
To further curb IMEI tampering, authorities have mandated that all mobile devices must be registered with a legitimate IMEI number before activation. This move prevents unauthorized phone usage and enhances national security. By promoting stricter IMEI regulation and cracking down on mobile number spoofing, India aims to build a more secure and transparent telecommunications ecosystem.
As part of its awareness campaign, the DoT urges users to report suspicious activities and stay vigilant against phishing scams and fraudulent calls. With robust Indian telecommunication laws in place, the government is taking proactive steps to prevent digital fraud and reinforce trust in India's telecom infrastructure.
