Equinix has signed its first power purchase agreement (PPA) in India with CleanMax, a renewable energy provider in the Commercial and Industrial (C&I) sector. This partnership will provide renewable energy sufficient to match the consumption of Equinix’s growing portfolio of data centers in Mumbai and support the nation’s renewable energy target. Both the parties will collaborate to build a 33 MW Captive Power Plant in Maharashtra. The Captive Power Projects is set to become operational in phases in 2025.
Under this partnership, CleanMax will supply Equinix with 100% renewable energy, sourced primarily from solar and wind farms. The agreement aims to power Equinix’s two International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in Mumbai—MU1 and MU2—making them entirely dependent on sustainable energy sources for their operations. By transitioning to renewable energy, Equinix seeks to significantly reduce its carbon footprint, ensuring its facilities align with India’s broader environmental goals and its own global sustainability targets
Manoj Paul, Managing Director, India, Equinix, said, “We are thrilled to partner with CleanMax to establish this Captive Power Plant in Maharashtra, India. This PPA not only strengthens our commitment to sustainability but also enables us to provide our customers in India with 100% renewable energy coverage for their deployments at Equinix. India ranks fourth globally for total renewable power capacity additions. As a market leader in India, Equinix is committed to supporting the country’s sustainable development goals.”
Adding to this, Raouf Abdel, Executive Vice President, Global Operations, Equinix, said, “Digital infrastructure has become the critical foundation of the economy. As the demand for data centres continues to grow, ensuring a sustainable and reliable energy source becomes a significant challenge. This investment aligns with our long-term commitment to sustainability and reinforces our position as a leader in the industry. We are excited to contribute to the growth of the Indian market while driving positive change and fostering a more sustainable future for data centres.”

This partnership with CleanMax is a vital part of Equinix’s broader commitment to sustainability, including its pledge to achieve 100% renewable energy usage across its global operations. Equinix has already achieved a renewable energy coverage rate of 96% in 2022 and is striving to close the gap by focusing on cleaner energy procurement, energy efficiency enhancements, and collaboration with renewable energy providers like CleanMax.
Through this partnership, CleanMax will deliver renewable power to Equinix through open access agreements, leveraging its extensive network of solar and wind farms across India. The partnership also aligns with CleanMax’s mission to enable businesses to transition to greener energy and reduce their environmental impact. With an impressive track record of implementing over 1,000 MW of renewable energy projects, CleanMax is well-positioned to support Equinix’s decarbonization efforts and contribute to India’s renewable energy targets.
