Face ID Under Fire: BASF Takes Apple to Court

Apple’s Face ID technology is at the center of a major patent battle after German chemicals giant BASF sued the iPhone maker in the United States. The lawsuit alleges that facial-authentication technology used across multiple iPhone and iPad models infringes seven patents held by BASF subsidiary trinamiX. The complaint was filed in federal court in Midland, Texas.

At the heart of the dispute is technology designed to make facial authentication more resistant to spoofing attacks. trinamiX says it spent more than a decade developing material and skin-detection capabilities that can distinguish a real human face from photographs, 3D-printed masks, silicone replicas and other fraudulent representations.

BASF alleges that Apple did not use its patented technology when Face ID debuted with the iPhone X in 2017, but subsequently incorporated technologies covered by trinamiX patents into newer products. The complaint identifies devices including the iPhone 15, iPhone 16, iPhone 17 and iPad Pro among products allegedly using the disputed technology.

The case could have significant implications because biometric authentication has become fundamental to smartphone security, digital payments and identity verification. BASF is seeking unspecified damages and a court order preventing further infringement. Apple had not publicly commented on the allegations at the time of initial reporting, and the claims have yet to be proven in court.

Beyond the dispute between BASF and Apple, the lawsuit highlights the rising value of liveness detection, anti-spoofing and material-sensing technologies as synthetic identities and AI-generated fraud become more sophisticated. The battle demonstrates a larger reality: in the age of AI-driven impersonation, recognizing a face is no longer enough—authentication systems must establish whether the person behind that face is genuinely human and present.
