An armed robber posing as a delivery person reportedly stole around ₹98 crore (US $11 million) worth of cryptocurrency from a San Francisco residence linked to Sam Altman’s former partner’s home. The victim, a tech investor residing at the property, was physically assaulted and tied up before the intruder drained his digital wallets.
The incident occurred late Saturday at the $4.4 million home in the Mission District. Door-bell camera footage shows the suspect arriving with a white package and claiming to be a courier for a parcel service. After being let in, the intruder pulled a gun, duct-taped the resident and forced access to his crypto holdings — including Ethereum and Bitcoin.
According to police reports, the man spent about 90 minutes inside the home. During that time he stole the resident’s laptop and phone before transferring the entire crypto cache to unknown wallets. The ordeal left the victim shaken, though he reportedly sustained only minor physical injuries.
The home belongs to Lachy Groom — a venture capitalist and former partner of Altman — who purchased the property from Altman’s brother in 2021. The person who answered the door, identified only as “Joshua,” is said to live there under Groom’s ownership.
Security experts warn this violent crypto heist reflects a growing global trend: physical attacks targeting wealthy crypto holders. Such “wrench attacks,” where assailants use force, are increasingly replacing phishing or hacking, because they exploit the irreversible nature and anonymity of blockchain transfers.
No arrests have been made so far. San Francisco police are investigating the case as a possible organized crime operation, given its apparent planning and execution precision.
The theft is a stark reminder of how digital assets — often lauded for security and decentralization — remain vulnerable when oversight is entirely in the hands of individuals. Experts recommend crypto holders adopt enhanced physical and digital security: avoid openly showcasing wealth, use hardware wallets, consider vault storage or multi-signature custody services, and never let unverified delivery personnel inside personal premises.
