Google has announced the next evolution of AI in Gmail, aiming to transform how nearly 3 billion users interact with their inboxes. Powered by Gemini, the new features position Gmail as a personalized command center rather than a passive email tool.
At the heart of the update is the AI Inbox, a new optional view that highlights what matters most. Emails are organized into Suggested to-dos, flagging messages that require action, and Catch me up, which summarizes critical updates such as travel plans, reservations, purchases, and returns. This feature is rolling out to Trusted Testers.
Google is also introducing AI Overviews in Gmail search, allowing users to describe what they’re looking for in natural language and receive an AI-generated overview based entirely on their inbox content. Alongside this is Proofread, an advanced writing refinement tool that improves clarity, tone, grammar, and structure. Both features are launching for G1 Ultra and Pro subscribers.
In a significant move, Google is making popular AI tools free for all users, including personalized Suggested Replies, thread summaries, and Help Me Write, which generates emails from a single prompt.
Together, these updates signal Google’s push to make email more proactive, contextual, and intelligent—reshaping Gmail into an always-on AI assistant for everyday communication.
