This follows previous job cuts at Google, including hundreds of roles in its platforms and devices group in April, and 12,000 layoffs in January 2023, as Alphabet adjusted its priorities amid global economic uncertainty
In a fresh round of restructuring, Google has laid off approximately 200 employees from its global business organization, the division that oversees sales operations and strategic partnerships. The layoffs come amid the company’s ongoing push to streamline operations and shift resources toward artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure.
A Google spokesperson confirmed the move, describing it as part of a broader effort to enhance internal efficiency, promote faster decision-making, and better serve customers in a rapidly changing tech landscape. While the company referred to the layoffs as a “small adjustment,” they reflect deeper strategic shifts underway at parent company Alphabet.
This development follows similar job reductions at Google in recent months. In April, the tech giant cut hundreds of roles within its platforms and devices group, affecting teams behind Android, Pixel, and Chrome. Alphabet had previously reduced its workforce by 12,000 employees in January 2023, citing the need to recalibrate its priorities amid global economic uncertainty.
AI drives industry restructuring
By the close of 2024, Alphabet’s total headcount stood at over 183,000. The current layoffs continue a pattern of resource reallocation, focusing heavily on areas like AI development, machine learning, and enterprise cloud services — sectors that are expected to drive long-term growth.
Other major tech firms are also downsizing in response to shifting priorities. Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple have all implemented workforce reductions in recent quarters, targeting underperforming units or non-core operations.
The trend highlights an industry-wide pivot, as leading technology companies restructure around innovation-focused growth, cost management, and digital transformation strategies centered on artificial intelligence.
