Google is reportedly enhancing its Phone app on Pixel devices with a new feature called “AI Replies,” designed to streamline how users handle calls through automated, AI-generated responses. According to reports, code within the latest beta version of Google’s Phone app hints at this development. The new feature appears to expand on the existing Contextual Call Screen, which allows users to manage calls without needing to answer directly.
Currently, Pixel’s Call Screen function enables users to reply to calls with quick, preset responses provided by Google Assistant. For instance, if someone calls to confirm an appointment, users can choose between responses like “confirm” or “cancel appointment.” The upcoming “AI Replies” feature, however, is expected to offer a more personalized range of responses by leveraging Google’s Gemini AI models. This AI-driven function may generate replies that are more conversational and tailored to the specific context of each call, potentially making call management more dynamic and versatile.
AI Replies is expected to be an optional feature, allowing users to decide whether to use standard preset responses or to enable AI-generated suggestions. This new functionality is likely to launch with a future Pixel feature drop, initially available for select Google Pixel smartphones.
In parallel, Google is reportedly gearing up to release its next-generation AI model, Gemini 2.0, this December. The new model is expected to build on the capabilities of the original Gemini model and to rival OpenAI’s upcoming model, also due by year-end.
In addition to advancements in call management, Google is said to be working on an ambitious AI project, “Project Jarvis.” This AI-powered assistant is expected to automate web-based tasks, handling tasks such as online research, shopping, and booking tickets. Project Jarvis, likely supported by future iterations of the Gemini model, aims to provide users with a more autonomous AI experience that can streamline routine digital interactions.
These innovations suggest Google’s strategic focus on integrating AI across its ecosystem, enhancing user convenience and making AI a more interactive and indispensable part of the Pixel smartphone experience.
