Google has announced the launch of Android XR, a cutting-edge operating system tailored for “extended reality” (XR) devices such as headsets and smart glasses. Partnering with Samsung and other hardware manufacturers, Google aims to provide developers with early access to Android XR, with consumer-ready devices expected to debut next year.
Android XR represents a significant evolution in immersive technology. While specific details about the operating system remain sparse, Google has revealed plans to integrate immersive versions of apps like Maps, Photos, and YouTube. The company is also developing a multi-window Chrome browser tailored for XR environments. Additionally, Android XR will support existing Play Store apps, mirroring Apple’s approach with Vision Pro and iPad apps.
At the core of this initiative is Google’s Gemini AI, envisioned as a transformative force in enhancing XR experiences. Sameer Samat, head of the Android ecosystem, emphasized AI’s pivotal role, stating, “We believe a digital assistant integrated with your XR experience is the killer app for the form factor, akin to what email or texting was for the smartphone.” Gemini’s ability to capture and create audio and video is expected to elevate the practicality and appeal of XR devices.
Google’s adoption of the term “XR” underscores its ambition to encompass a broad spectrum of experiences, from virtual reality (VR) to augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR). “When we say extended reality or XR, we’re talking about a whole spectrum of experiences,” Samat explained, highlighting the versatility of the platform.
The company envisions XR devices that seamlessly transition between virtual and real-world environments, much like Apple’s Vision Pro. It also sees potential in audio-only devices like the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses. While Google has yet to confirm plans to build its own XR hardware, it is committed to supporting a wide range of devices.
Currently, Android XR remains in its nascent stages, with developers beginning to explore its potential. Google’s collaboration with Samsung includes a device codenamed “Moohan,” slated for release next year. Android XR represents the culmination of Google’s investments in AI, the Android ecosystem, and wearable technology. The true test lies ahead: whether users will embrace the XR vision.
