Google has announced in a blog post that it is working in partnership with Samsung to make apps more reliable in the background on Samsung Galaxy smartphones with One UI 6.0 based on Android 14. Samsung said it will not kill background services on Android 14 if the app is developed according to the new Android foreground service API policy. The upcoming Android version makes some major changes to how background apps and services are handled.
“To strengthen the Android platform, our collaboration with Google has resulted in a unified policy that we expect will create a more consistent and reliable user experience for Galaxy users. Since One UI 6.0, foreground services of apps targeting Android 14 will be guaranteed to work as intended so long as they are developed according to Android’s new foreground service API policy,” Samsung said.
According to Google’s new policies for Android 14, Android app developers won’t have to worry about the app getting killed in the background. If Google manages to get more app developers and phone manufacturers on board, users and developers won’t have to worry about apps behaving differently on phones and tablets from various brands.
The first public Android 14 beta revealed last month came with a lot of new features, including per-app language preference, predictive back gestures, and a new system share sheet. Google also wants the new OS to ease restrictions on foreground and background services to get away with RAM management issues that plague Android devices.
