Raising an important alert about the increasing misinformation on social media, The Indian government has warned citizens against Pakistan-sponsored propaganda. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check, the official fact-checking arm of the government, shared a post advising people to be extra cautious while consuming information online. As social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter and Instagram become prime sources of news, fake posts could easily be disguised as legitimate news, especially during sensitive times.
Online security warning – why is this important
Much of this may target sensitive national issues, especially matters involving the Indian Armed Forces. The aim is to confuse, mislead, or provoke the public.
PIB advises users to thoroughly verify anything they see online before believing or forwarding it. If they come across any suspicious content particularly posts about military operations or national security, they are asked to report it immediately.
The advisory comes shortly after India carried out missile strikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan and PoK in response to a brutal terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 civilian lives. Amidst this India Pakistan conflict and cross-border tensions, the risk of fake news stirring unrest is greater than ever.
In times like these, responsible use of social media is more important than ever. Don't let false information manipulate your views always verify before you trust or share, PIB says.
