The rise of deepfake technology in political campaigning has reignited concerns ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections. Last month, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) shared an Artificial Intelligence-generated deepfake video portraying Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, India’s social reformer and the architect of its Constitution, appearing to bless former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. In response, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) retaliated with its own AI-generated content, escalating the debate over the ethical use of AI in politics.
The controversy is fueled by the accessibility of Grok AI, the advanced chatbot and image generation tool developed by X (formerly Twitter). Unlike its competitors, Grok AI—under the direction of X’s owner, Elon Musk—does not restrict the creation of imagery involving real-life political figures. This policy has resulted in a proliferation of politically charged deepfake content, sparking concerns about its impact on public opinion and electoral integrity.
Deepfakes, which use AI to create highly realistic but fabricated images or videos, have become a potent tool in the digital age. In the context of elections, they pose significant risks by blurring the lines between truth and fiction, potentially misleading voters and manipulating narratives.
Critics argue that the unchecked use of Grok AI is opening the floodgates for misuse. Political analysts warn that deepfakes could erode trust in authentic political messaging, fostering confusion and misinformation. With platforms like X enabling the spread of such content, the ethical and legal challenges surrounding AI-generated media are becoming more pronounced.
As Delhi approaches its Assembly elections, the incident highlights the urgent need for regulatory frameworks to address the use of AI in political campaigning. Transparency, accountability, and technological safeguards will be crucial to ensure that innovation in AI does not undermine democratic processes.
