Actress Hayden Panettiere, best known for her roles in "Heroes" and "Nashville," has died at age 36. Her boyfriend and his brother called 911 to say the actress was unresponsive Sunday afternoon at a South Carolina apartment complex where she had been temporarily staying, and first responders and emergency medical services found her unresponsive and in cardiac arrest, initiating advanced cardiac life support measures. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced deceased at 2:32 PM.
An autopsy performed the following Monday found no signs of trauma that would have contributed to her death, and her official cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and additional studies. Police said the preliminary investigation had not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
Some unconfirmed details have also surfaced through celebrity gossip outlets rather than official sources: dispatch audio obtained by TMZ referenced a possible overdose and included paramedics performing chest compressions before she was pronounced dead, though authorities have not addressed whether an overdose actually took place.
Panettiere's father, Skip Panettiere, said in a statement, "It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden," describing her as "an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen." Tributes have poured in from former co-stars, including Viola Davis and Melissa Barrera.
Panettiere had recently pushed back publicly against a "misconception" that she had been forced into treatment, saying she had sought it out herself, and denied allegations that she had abandoned her daughter.
