Protect Your Instagram from AI Misuse
Meta's new Muse Image feature allows users to generate AI images using public Instagram profiles simply by entering an account handle. While designed to make AI image creation more personalized, the feature raises significant privacy concerns because users are not notified when their likeness is used.
By default, public Instagram photos can become source material for AI-generated images, increasing the risk of impersonation, deepfakes, scams, and identity fraud. Security experts warn that cybercriminals could exploit the feature to create convincing synthetic identities for phishing and social engineering attacks.
Users can reduce the risk by navigating to Profile > Menu > Sharing and Reuse and disabling the options that allow others to reuse their posts and reels with Meta's AI features. However, this only prevents future image generation and does not remove AI images already created.
For stronger protection, users should enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) and consider making their Instagram accounts private.
As generative AI evolves, protecting digital identity requires stronger consent, transparency, and user control. Privacy must become the default-not an afterthought.
