The new feature lets users repost Stories from any public account without needing to be tagged, streamlining sharing, improving attribution, and removing the reliance on screenshots. Creators can disable it through privacy controls.
Instagram has introduced a new feature that allows users to reshare Stories from any public account directly to their own Stories, even when they are not tagged. The update, confirmed by the company through a Threads post, aims to simplify sharing and reduce the friction caused when users had to request tags or rely on screenshots to circulate content.
Streamlined sharing and automatic attribution
Until now, only tagged users could reshare someone else’s Story. With the latest update, Instagram is making public content more shareable while preserving credit for original creators. The feature mirrors the app’s reposting capability for Reels and feed posts, which lets users share public content with automatic attribution.
The platform says the change is particularly useful in everyday scenarios — such as group photos where someone is left untagged or when users want to reshare a humorous, inspirational or emotional Story from a public profile. Instead of taking a screenshot, viewers can now tap the share button found beside the message box and select “Add to your story.” The reposted Story will appear with a visible credit to the original account.
How to enable or disable the feature
The update is already rolling out globally on both iOS and Android, though some users may receive it gradually. For public accounts that prefer to restrict sharing, Instagram has added a new privacy setting that allows creators to turn off Story resharing.
To disable the feature, users can go to Settings & Activity → Privacy → Story, and toggle off “Allow sharing to story.” Once switched off, followers will no longer be able to repost their Stories.
With this move, Instagram is expanding its sharing tools while giving creators control over how their content circulates — striking a balance between wider reach and privacy preferences.
