Reliance Industries' Jio Platforms and Luxembourg-based SES have formed a joint venture, Orbit Connect India, which has recently received approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) to operate satellites in India.
This approval will allow Orbit Connect India to provide satellite-based high-speed internet access across the country.
This development comes at a time when other major players like Elon Musk's Starlink and Amazon are also seeking similar approvals for satellite communication services in India, signaling a growing competitive landscape in the satellite internet market.
The clearances were issued by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in April and June that allow Orbit Connect to position satellites above India.
According to a report by Reuters, the authorization for Orbit Connect India, a joint venture between Reliance Industries' Jio Platforms and Luxembourg-based SES, was granted by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in April and June. These authorizations were not previously reported. While IN-SPACe has approved the joint venture to operate satellites above India, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) also needs to give its approval for the operations to commence.
