With over 60 crore devotees expected, the Maha Kumbh has surpassed initial projections of 40 crore, with more than 56.75 crore attending by February 19, sparking an economic boom beyond Prayagraj
The ongoing Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj has evolved into a monumental event, not only as the world’s largest religious gathering but also as a transformative economic powerhouse, generating an estimated Rs 3 lakh crore in business activity. The gathering, which has drawn millions of devotees from across the globe, has proven the strong link between spirituality and commerce.
With over 60 crore devotees expected to attend, the Maha Kumbh has already exceeded its initial projections of 40 crore pilgrims. As of February 19, more than 56.75 crore devotees had visited Prayagraj to take a holy dip at the Sangam, triggering an economic boom far beyond the city. The surge in pilgrims has led to increased economic activity not just in Prayagraj, but also in surrounding cities such as Ayodhya, Varanasi, and other religious hubs within a 150 km radius.
Local economy gets a fillip
Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), emphasized the critical role the Maha Kumbh plays in boosting local economies. The hospitality sector has experienced record-high occupancy rates in hotels, guesthouses, and rental accommodations, while the food and beverage industry has seen a rise in demand for restaurants, street food vendors, and packaged food suppliers. Transport services, including trains, flights, buses, and cabs, have seen substantial growth, further fuelling the local economy.
Small businesses and artisans have also thrived, benefiting from the increased demand for religious attire, puja samagri, and souvenirs. The retail sector, including textiles, apparel, and consumer goods, has seen significant growth as devotees purchase goods for religious ceremonies and personal use. Additionally, healthcare and wellness services, such as medical facilities and Ayurvedic centers, have experienced an uptick in visitors due to the large number of pilgrims.
Ripple effect in Ayodhya and Varanasi
The telecommunications sector has been stretched to meet the event's demands, with enhanced mobile networks and AI-based surveillance systems ensuring smooth operations and security. Local infrastructure and civic services have also been bolstered to manage the large crowds, ensuring a safe and efficient experience for the devotees.
The economic effects of the Maha Kumbh have rippled outward, benefiting neighbouring cities like Ayodhya and Varanasi, where tourism, trade, and religious activities have seen a surge. As the event concludes on February 26, experts predict continued economic growth, leaving a lasting impact on local businesses and industries. Maha Kumbh 2025 stands as a testament to the powerful economic potential of religious and cultural events in India.
