Aiming to establish itself as a key player in the AI sector, Maharashtra is set to develop its own Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy and be a leader in technological innovation. State Information and Technology Minister Ashish Shelar announced the move during a meeting with IT Department officials at the Sahyadri Guest House on December 31.
The meeting was attended by IT Department Secretary Parrag Jaiin Nainutia, MahaIT Managing Director Jayshree Bhoj, and other senior officials. Shelar emphasized the transformative potential of AI, stating its importance in boosting industries, attracting businesses, generating employment, and positioning Maharashtra at the forefront of AI innovation.
"The AI era has begun, and the state must seize this opportunity," Shelar said. "By adopting AI, we can drive economic growth, generate jobs for the youth, and strengthen our position in the global AI landscape."
The announcement aligns with the India AI Mission launched earlier last year by the central government, which allocated ₹10,372 crore to advance AI capabilities nationwide. This mission includes initiatives like the India AI Datasets Platform, innovation centres, skill development, and support for startups in the AI domain.
Shelar highlighted the need for Maharashtra to align its ambitions with this national programme to remain competitive. Starting this month (January 2025), the central government will begin aggregating non-personal datasets to create a robust database for the India AI Datasets Platform. This resource will enable seamless access for startups, researchers, academics, and companies to develop AI applications and services.
With this move, Maharashtra aims to leverage AI for economic and technological growth, ensuring it plays a leading role in shaping the country’s AI-driven future.
