Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has officially partnered with Midjourney, one of the fastest-growing startups in AI image and video generation technology. Announced by Meta’s Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang on Threads, this strategic collaboration will allow Meta to license Midjourney’s cutting-edge AI models and integrate them into its upcoming AI-powered products and services.
Wang emphasized that Meta is taking an “all-of-the-above approach” to win the AI race, focusing on world-class talent, advanced compute infrastructure, and partnerships with leading AI players. The move positions Meta to directly challenge top competitors in the generative AI market, including OpenAI’s Sora, Google’s Veo, and Black Forest Lab’s Flux.
Meta has already introduced its own AI image generator, Imagine, across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, as well as its AI video tool, Movie Gen, which creates short clips from user prompts. However, the partnership with Midjourney is expected to significantly enhance the realism, creativity, and scalability of Meta’s generative AI products.
This deal comes amid Meta’s massive AI expansion strategy. In 2024, CEO Mark Zuckerberg invested billions in AI, including a $14 billion stake in Scale AI, the acquisition of AI voice startup Play AI, and offering top researchers compensation packages exceeding $100 million.
Although acquisition talks reportedly occurred earlier, Midjourney’s CEO David Holz confirmed that the company remains independent and free from outside investors. This independence, combined with Meta’s global reach, makes the partnership a game-changer in the generative AI industry, paving the way for next-gen AI content creation tools for social media, businesses, and creators worldwide.

Founded in 2022, Midjourney quickly became a leader in the AI art and content creation, famous for its unique, hyper-realistic image styles. By 2023, it generated over $200 million in revenue through its subscription model, starting at $10 per month and going up to $120 per month for advanced tiers. In June, Midjourney launched its first AI video model V1, further cementing its dominance in the creative AI space.
