Facebook parent Meta Platforms has announced a separate app for its Meta AI assistant, in the likes of those offered by Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Alphabet’s Google. The standalone app comes as Meta looks to boost the AI assistant’s usage, apart from being available within WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. The app will offer more personalized responses based on context and other user-specific elements related to the user's Facebook and Instagram accounts.
Introduced during Meta's inaugural AI developer event, LlamaCon, the app is powered by Meta's Llama 4 large language model, offering advanced reasoning, multilingual support, and personalized responses by integrating data from users' Facebook and Instagram profiles.
Meta AI features a "Discover" feed where users can share and explore AI-generated prompts, fostering a community-driven content ecosystem. The app also includes a voice mode for interactive communication and integrates with Meta’s AI glasses and their companion app.
To ensure robust initial engagement, Meta enlisted content creators—such as meme makers, travel bloggers, and tech enthusiasts—to test the app early and populate the Discover feed. Although creators received early access, they were not paid for their participation.
Meta plans to test a paid subscription for advanced features in the second quarter of 2025, with the goal of reaching over a billion users by the end of the year
