Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has tapped Vishal Shah, a long-time Meta executive, to assume a key role in leading the company’s artificial intelligence product management.
Shah joined Meta more than a decade ago and built his reputation during his time as the head of product for Instagram, where he served for over six years. In 2021, he transitioned to become Vice-President of the Metaverse division, overseeing Meta’s virtual-and-augmented-reality ambitions.
In his new assignment, Shah will report to Nat Friedman, Meta’s head of AI product, and will be responsible for integrating AI across Meta’s apps and platforms. He is tasked with coordinating efforts between Meta’s AI research units and its Reality Labs division. The appointment comes amid a broader restructuring of Meta’s AI operations, which recently included the elimination of around 600 positions in its Superintelligence Labs unit.
Shah’s move signals Meta’s pivot from prototyping AI experiments to shipping integrated AI-driven products at scale. It reflects growing pressure on the company to compete with rivals like OpenAI and Microsoft in the AI race.
