San Francisco-based GitHub tool for coders, into hosting and development service, which hosts 27 million software developers working on 80 million repositories of code, on and off for a few years. Recently they began talks about a partnership but progressed to discussing an acquisition, according to another person familiar with the situation.
GitHub is a code housing platform that allows developers to store their projects and network with peers and GitHub covers why the platform matters, how developers use it, and more and work together to create software. With GitHub one can collaborate on projects and invite other programmers to work on your project from anywhere. GitHub works seamlessly with the command-line tool Git, wherein developers can easily check in and check out their projects. This cheat sheet is an easy way to get up to speed on GitHub. There are more than 2 million work on regular updates, made to projects, which Microsoft is eyeing to reach out.
It is true that open-source is growing and it allows developers to connect with, improve upon and share code - an approach that could threaten Microsoft’s business model. Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft has changed the business model by supporting many flavours of Linux and find on some significant cloud and developer products itself. Microsoft has been partnering with GitHub for the last few years. The question comes when GitHub was last valued at $2 billion in 2015, GitHub has many valued customers including Google, Adobe, Twitter, Microsoft, and PayPal, as well as various government agencies across the globe use GitHub to great success and it might helped the valuation now reached to hopping $7.5 billion.
One of the biggest advantage with GitHub is the Linux Kernel community which has over 670,000 commits, over 43,000 stars, and over 16,000 forks. It is because of Software as a Service (SaaS) and mobile devices, app development awareness is increasing rapidly. With the help of GitHub, app development could come as the reality. GitHub is the largest community of open source developers in the world-with millions of projects currently in development.
Microsoft expects the acquisition to complete regulatory review by the end of calendar 2018. The new equation among Microsoft and Github, Microsoft's CEO of Xamarin, Nat Friedman, is taking over as CEO of Github and Chris Wanstrath, CEO- Github will become a Microsoft Technical Fellow as part of the arrangement. Chances are most likely, it will run as independent entity.
The analytics said, the top software majors MICROSOFT,GOOGLE and AMAZON is trying to position their marketing and product strategy to drive the industry. When we rewind on the significant investment towards R&D towards code pushing and storing repositories. In 2017, Microsoft had 1,300 employees pushing code to 825 top repositories on GitHub in compared to Google with 900 employees contributing to about 1,100 repositories, whereas Amazon with 134 employees pushing code to 158 top projects. Last year, Microsoft surprisingly moved to the Git version-control system for Windows development. Probably, to maintain the leadership in the industry.
