To avail, users must update the Photos app to version 2025.11090.25001.0 or higher via the Microsoft Store to access these features.
Microsoft has officially launched AI-powered Auto-Categorization in the Photos app on Windows 11, a major update designed to simplify photo management for users. The new feature, currently rolling out across all Insider channels, is available exclusively on Copilot+ PCs and leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically sort and organize images into meaningful categories.

Smarter Photo Organization with AI
The Auto-Categorization feature in Microsoft Photos groups pictures into four predefined categories — screenshots, receipts, identity documents, and notes. By intelligently recognizing visual content, the AI saves users time, reduces digital clutter, and ensures faster navigation through photo libraries.
For instance, a scanned passport or handwritten note is instantly categorized, helping users avoid endless scrolling. Even better, the AI is language-agnostic — meaning a Hungarian, Japanese, or Spanish passport is still identified as a “Passport,” regardless of the text language.
How It Works
- Automatic Sorting: AI groups photos into relevant folders based on detected content.
- Language-Independent Recognition: Works globally across documents in any language.
- User Control: Users can manually change categories or provide feedback to improve accuracy.
- Quick Search: Organized libraries enable faster searches via the left navigation panel or search bar.
This innovation highlights Microsoft’s push toward AI-driven productivity tools on Windows 11 and Copilot+ devices, giving users a smarter, more efficient way to handle personal and professional files. Alongside Auto-Categorization, Microsoft also announced that Super Resolution is now available across Snapdragon, AMD, and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs. This upgrade improves image quality by enhancing low-resolution photos and scaling them with sharper detail.
In an era where users deal with thousands of digital images, this AI-based photo categorization tool provides a practical solution for better digital organization, faster access, and enhanced productivity. Whether managing receipts for taxes, storing scanned IDs, or saving quick notes, the new Photos app update makes photo libraries smarter and easier to use.
With AI Auto-Categorization and Super Resolution, Microsoft continues to position Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs as the future of intelligent, productivity-focused computing.
