Microsoft has fixed a persistent issue in classic Outlook that prevented Microsoft 365 users from accessing certain encrypted emails following a December update. The problem affected messages sent using the “Encrypt Only” option, which secures email content without restricting forwarding, copying, or printing.
The bug appeared after users updated to Current Channel Version 2511 (Build 19426.20218). Instead of displaying readable content, affected emails showed a message_v2.rpmsg attachment, effectively blocking access. Even after credential verification, users were unable to view the message body in the Reading Pane.
Microsoft confirmed that the issue has now been resolved in the Beta Channel, with rollout to the Current Channel and Current Channel Preview (Build 19725.20000) underway in February. The company clarified that other encryption policies were not impacted.
For organizations heavily dependent on encrypted communication, the glitch caused operational friction, particularly for teams relying on quick message previews. Until the fix reaches all environments, Microsoft recommended two temporary workarounds: sending encrypted emails via the Options ribbon instead of the File menu, or reverting to an earlier Office build.
The incident underscores ongoing stability challenges with classic Outlook as Microsoft continues pushing its new Outlook platform. With the latest patch, secure email functionality is expected to normalize for affected enterprises.
