Microsoft is set to roll out Xbox Mode for all Windows 11 devices starting in April, delivering a controller-optimized gaming interface across laptops and desktop PCs. The announcement came during the Game Developers Conference, where the company also shared early details about next-generation Xbox hardware and new developer tools aimed at improving game performance.
Controller-Optimized Interface for Windows 11
Xbox Mode, originally introduced on the Asus ROG Ally Xbox edition handheld and select Windows 11 gaming portables, will now expand to all compatible PCs. The feature offers a full-screen, controller-friendly interface that allows players to browse game libraries, launch titles, access Game Bar tools, and switch between apps seamlessly.
The interface is comparable to Valve’s Big Picture Mode on Steam, providing a consistent console-like experience for PC gamers. Microsoft has noted that Xbox Mode will initially launch in select markets, with a broader rollout schedule expected in the coming months. Last year, Insider testers experienced an improved task switcher that made jumping between games and apps faster and more intuitive.
New Developer Tools and Hardware Preview
Alongside the interface update, Microsoft unveiled early information about a new gaming system, codenamed Project Helix, designed to run both PC and console games. Developer kits for the platform are expected to ship next year. According to Jason Ronald, Project Helix will leverage next-generation AMD technology, similar to the hardware expected in future consoles.
Microsoft also introduced Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) to reduce game stuttering by pre-compiling shaders before gameplay begins. Updates to DirectStorage technology will speed up game loading on NVMe SSDs, including support for Zstandard compression and a new Game Asset Conditional Library for efficient asset management. Developers will also gain early access to machine learning integration within the DirectX platform, enabling improved performance and smarter in-game experiences.
Xbox Mode and these accompanying tools aim to bring console-style gaming to Windows 11 PCs while equipping developers with new technologies to enhance game performance and reduce latency. The move underscores Microsoft’s ongoing strategy to unify PC and console gaming experiences under a single, optimized ecosystem.
