The highway authority has cautioned vehicle owners against fraudulent websites and links offering FASTag annual passes, urging users to rely only on official platforms to avoid financial loss, data theft, and unauthorised access to personal information.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued a public warning after detecting a rise in online scams targeting motorists seeking to purchase or renew FASTag annual passes. According to the authority, fake websites and unauthorised digital links are misleading users by claiming to sell one-year FASTag passes, resulting in monetary losses and misuse of personal details.
Officials said several complaints have been received from vehicle owners who were duped into making payments on fraudulent platforms, with some victims losing close to Rs. 3,000. NHAI has advised motorists to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of any platform offering FASTag-related services.
FASTag annual pass available only on official app
NHAI clarified that the FASTag annual pass can be purchased exclusively through the Rajmargyatra mobile application. Any website, social media page, message, or advertisement claiming to offer the pass outside this official channel should be treated as fraudulent. The authority noted that scammers often design fake links to closely resemble legitimate portals, prompting users to share vehicle details, FASTag numbers, or payment information.
In an advisory shared on social media platform X, NHAI urged highway users to avoid clicking on unknown links or engaging with unauthorised sellers. It reiterated that no private website or third-party platform has approval to issue FASTag annual passes.
The FASTag annual pass is meant for private cars, jeeps, and vans, and remains valid for one year or up to 200 toll transactions, whichever comes earlier. Managed by the Indian Highway Management Company Limited, the pass enables seamless, cashless toll payments and helps reduce waiting time at toll plazas.
Steps to avoid fraud and report suspicious activity
To stay safe, users are advised to purchase FASTag services only through official bank applications or the NPCI MyFASTag portal. NHAI also warned against responding to calls or messages requesting QR code scans, OTPs, or verification links. Motorists should enable transaction alerts, monitor balances regularly, and report any unusual deductions to their issuing bank or the NHAI helpline at 1033.
Suspected fraud cases should be promptly reported on cybercrime.gov.in, while affected users should contact their bank to block the FASTag and prevent further losses.
