In order to develop and deploy a GNSS-based electronic toll collecting system in India, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)-sponsored Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) has requested worldwide Expressions of Interest (EOI) from creative and qualified enterprises.
NHAI intends to integrate the GNSS-based electronic toll collection (ETC) system within the existing FASTag ecosystem, initially adopting a hybrid model alongside RFID-based ETC. Dedicated GNSS lanes will be established at toll plazas to facilitate smooth passage for vehicles utilizing the GNSS-based ETC.
Within the current FASTag ecosystem, NHAI intends to deploy a GNSS-based electronic toll collection system. Initially, a hybrid paradigm will be used to run both GNSS-based ETC and RFID-based ETC concurrently.
This innovative approach aims to streamline toll collection, reduce congestion at toll plazas, and enhance the overall efficiency of India's highway infrastructure.
Tolls will be calculated automatically based on the distance traveled on toll roads, reducing the need for manual toll collection. Leveraging satellite technology, the system will provide real-time data on vehicle movements, ensuring accurate and timely toll collection.
By eliminating the need for physical toll booths, the system will reduce congestion and delays at toll plazas, improving traffic flow. Drivers will experience a more seamless travel experience, with no need to stop and pay tolls manually.
The satellite-based system ensures accurate billing, reducing discrepancies and potential disputes over toll charges. Authorities will have better oversight and monitoring of toll collection processes, ensuring transparency and accountability.
By minimizing stop-and-go traffic at toll plazas, the system will help reduce vehicle emissions and contribute to environmental sustainability. The system promotes efficient use of resources by automating toll collection and reducing the need for physical infrastructure.
