Okta Launches In-Country Platform Tenants in India to Support Data Residency and AI Security
2026-01-20
Identity security company Okta announced the launch of in-country platform tenants in India, delivering data residency and enhanced disaster recovery capabilities to help highly regulated sectors securely adopt AI and strengthen defenses against advanced cyber threats.
The local tenants, hosted on Amazon Web Services, are designed to address India's evolving data, security, and compliance challenges, particularly for organizations in banking, financial services, insurance, and healthcare.
The move comes as enterprises in India accelerate AI adoption while struggling to keep security and governance measures aligned. Okta research found that 91% of organizations are already using AI agents, but only 10% have a well-developed strategy for managing non-human identities, highlighting a critical gap in identity governance.
"As AI agents enter the workforce, traditional perimeter-based security approaches can't keep up," said Stephanie Barnett, VP Presales and Interim GM, Okta APJ. "Okta is addressing this head-on with a unified identity security fabric that helps protect every identity—human or AI—with equal rigor."
The in-country deployment offers three key capabilities for Indian customers. Organizations can now store identity data within India's borders, designed to support those who prefer or require local storage based on internal policies or applicable regulations, including guidance from the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and sector-specific regulatory expectations.
The platform also extends protection to both human and machine identities through Okta's identity security fabric, providing controls to defend against emerging AI-powered cyber threats. Additionally, the company's advanced business continuity service provides enhanced resilience to help customers maintain operations during regional infrastructure outages.
"AI agents are transforming how work gets done, but they also introduce new identity and security challenges," said Shakeel Khan, RVP and Country Manager, Okta India. "Okta provides the identity security fabric that enables this trust, helping organisations in regulated sectors like BFSI and healthcare protect sensitive data and identities within India's borders."
New and existing Okta customers will be able to deploy in the India region in early 2026.
