Sam Altman emphasized that OpenAI's strategy is to stay ahead by continuously innovating, rather than engaging in legal disputes with competitors
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently addressed the growing competition from the Chinese startup DeepSeek, which has drawn attention for its chatbot’s impressive capabilities. Speaking to reporters in Tokyo, Altman made it clear that OpenAI has "no plans" to pursue legal action against DeepSeek, despite the controversy surrounding the startup’s technology.
Altman acknowledged the rising competition but remained confident in OpenAI’s position as a leader in the AI industry. "DeepSeek is certainly an impressive model, but we believe we will continue to push the frontier and deliver great products," he said.

He emphasized that OpenAI's strategy is to stay ahead by continuously innovating, rather than engaging in legal disputes with competitors. "We’ve had many competitors before, and it’s in everyone’s best interest for us to keep pushing forward," he added.
DeepSeek sparks IP concerns amid AI competition
The controversy surrounding DeepSeek centers on accusations that the Chinese startup may have reverse-engineered OpenAI’s AI models. OpenAI has previously warned that Chinese companies are using a method called "distillation" to replicate the behaviors of larger models, effectively learning from their more advanced counterparts. This practice has raised concerns about intellectual property in the rapidly evolving AI industry.
Although OpenAI has refrained from legal action against DeepSeek, the company itself is not without controversy. It is currently facing accusations of using copyrighted materials in training its own generative AI models, a challenge that mirrors the ongoing debate over intellectual property in AI development. As competition heats up, Altman’s focus remains on delivering cutting-edge technology and maintaining OpenAI's leadership in the field.
