Qualcomm Technologies has announced its latest premium-tier XR platform – Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1 to fuel the next generation of mixed and virtual (MR and VR) devices, boasting new power and thermal improvements that will allow OEMs to deliver richer metaverse experiences packed into a lighter form factor.
With a new platform configuration enabling better heat dissipation, significant performance headroom has been created to achieve 50% higher sustained power and 30% improved thermal performance. This allows more concurrent multimedia and perception technologies to be utilized simultaneously enabling full-sensory interactions, like creating life-like human expressions in the metaverse without compromising form factor.
The Snapdragon XR2+ platform introduces a new image processing pipeline which achieves less than 10ms latency to unlock superior full-color video pass-through MR experiences. The platform enables concurrent perception technologies, including head, hand and controller tracking, 3D reconstruction as well as low latency video pass-through. Seven concurrent cameras allow the physical and virtual worlds to blend into one all-encompassing MR experience through video pass- through alongside precise motion tracking and automatic room mapping. The platform’s high pixel density brings PC-quality virtual landscapes to life, while providing support for multiple sensors and cameras that give nuanced facial expressions to more realistic avatars.
Multiple OEMs have already committed to commercializing devices powered by Snapdragon XR2+ platform.
The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 1 Platform and Meta Quest Pro were announced at Meta Connect 2022. With the newly redesigned platform package of Snapdragon XR2+, better heat dissipation and significant performance headroom has been created to achieve 50% higher sustained power and 30% improved thermal performance. Each Quest Pro comes with 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and 10 high-res sensors, five inside the headset and five outside that help enhance a variety of immersive experiences. The Meta Quest Touch Pro controllers are powered by Snapdragon 662 Platform, which allows them to self-track through multiple embedded positional cameras and offers ultra-low latency to the headset; when combined with face and eye tracking, your avatar can now reflect you more naturally in VR.
“Today we are thrilled to see our longstanding partner, Meta, launch Meta Quest Pro which is another leap forward in VR hardware and helping to build a fully-realized metaverse,” said Hugo Swart, vice president and GM of XR, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “We worked closely with Meta on the platform requirements to deliver this new premium-tier Snapdragon XR2+ and we know it will help transform immersive experiences for users around the world.”
“At Meta we’re building the next-generation computing platform with our VR/MR devices. We believe VR and MR will radically transform how we work, collaborate, and connect with each other, and we’re thrilled to be with Qualcomm Technologies on this journey,” said Mark Rabkin, Head of VR at Reality Labs, Meta. “This latest generation of innovative Snapdragon technology is bringing huge compute gains in our VR form factor, enabling us to power much richer experiences in Meta Quest Pro. This is proof that Meta and Qualcomm Technologies are together building the future today.”
