The acquisition brings advanced AR mapping and immersive experience capabilities to Snap as the company accelerates development of its Specs smart glasses platform and expands its footprint in spatial computing technologies.
Snap has acquired augmented reality technology company Illumix in a move aimed at bolstering its capabilities in spatial computing and wearable devices, underscoring the social media firm's growing commitment to augmented reality as a future computing platform.
The deal will allow Snap to integrate Illumix’s expertise in AR mapping, immersive experiences and real-world digital interactions into its broader technology ecosystem. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
The acquisition comes as Snap continues investing heavily in its next-generation smart glasses initiative, Specs, which the company views as a key component of its long-term augmented reality strategy. Snap said Illumix’s experience in creating scalable AR environments and location-aware digital experiences made the company a valuable addition to its portfolio.
Industry observers see the transaction as part of a broader effort by Snap to differentiate itself in the emerging wearable technology market, where technology companies are increasingly competing to develop devices that blend digital content with the physical world.
AR expertise to support specs development
Founded in 2017 by entrepreneur Kirin Sinha, Illumix has built a reputation for developing augmented reality applications that integrate digital experiences into real-world environments. The company gained recognition through its work on interactive AR gaming experiences and has since expanded into artificial intelligence-powered applications that adapt dynamically to users’ surroundings.
Snap is expected to retain most of Illumix’s employees, enabling the company to leverage the startup’s technical expertise and product development capabilities.
The acquisition follows the launch of Specs Inc., Snap’s dedicated subsidiary focused on AR eyewear development. The company is expected to share additional updates related to the Specs platform at the upcoming Augmented World Expo 2026 in Long Beach, California.
Augmented reality remains a strategic priority
Snap has consistently identified augmented reality as one of its most important growth opportunities. In recent communications with shareholders, the company described smart glasses as a potential successor to smartphones, capable of transforming how consumers interact with digital information.
The company also reported continued momentum in its AR ecosystem, noting a significant increase in the number of AR lenses being created for the Specs platform.
The acquisition comes amid improving business performance for Snap. During the first quarter of 2026, the company reported revenue of $1.53 billion, up 12 percent year-on-year, while reducing its net losses. Meanwhile, Snapchat’s daily active user base reached 483 million, reflecting sustained growth in engagement.
With Illumix now part of its portfolio, Snap is positioning itself to accelerate innovation in augmented reality and strengthen its presence in the next generation of consumer computing.
