Trust Under Fire: Black Hat's Peer Review
Cybersecurity teams are facing mounting pressure as technologies evolve, adversaries advance, and practitioners scramble to keep pace with constant change, says Suzy Pallett, president of Black Hat — and she's named "resilience under pressure" the defining theme of Black Hat 2026.
In a video interview with ISMG at Black Hat USA 2026, Pallett explained that resilience depends on more than technology alone. It requires honest conversations, practical insights, and a trusted community where practitioners can challenge ideas and learn from each other, since the industry isn't going to solve these threats or challenges in isolation. At the center of that trust-building, Pallett said, sits Black Hat's blind peer review process, in which the review board scrutinizes research and vulnerabilities, helping distinguish technical substance from vendor marketing.
The scale of that filtering process is significant. Black Hat received thousands of research submissions this year, but only a fraction reach the stage, with an independent review board kept separate from event organizers evaluating every paper for authenticity and relevance before acceptance. Pallett framed the bar plainly: it's only able to get onto the Black Hat stage if it's been independently reviewed by the review board, which means it's useful, worth sharing, and something critical for the industry to hear.
That same rigor is now extending beyond research papers into the startup ecosystem. Black Hat's new Global Startup Spotlight consolidates competitions once run separately across Asia, Europe, Canada, and the U.S. into a single worldwide track, and notably, nearly every finalist this year was building AI tools for both defense and offense. Opnova was ultimately announced as the competition's winner.
Pallett's remarks came against the backdrop of a security landscape she described in urgent terms. "We are seeing those vulnerabilities daily, seconds, minutes," she said, adding that the industry still needs to focus on urgency and how to collaborate in critical environments to devise collective solutions. Beyond the peer-review conversation, Pallett also discussed how public-private collaboration and technical depth shape Black Hat's keynote selection, and why security leaders should build peer networks they can rely on long after the event itself ends.
This year's edition, Black Hat's 29th anniversary event, backed up that ambition with scale: the conference featured over 100 peer-reviewed Briefings, over 100 Trainings, a full day of Summits, over 120 Sponsored Sessions, and over 80 Arsenal tool demos. By the closing, Pallett reflected that Black Hat USA 2026 reinforced why the community remains essential to collective defense, with the research unveiled, intelligence shared, and connections forged there set to directly influence how the industry defends against tomorrow's threats.
Pallett's emphasis on peer review as a trust mechanism, rather than simply an academic formality, reflects a genuine structural response to a problem we've touched on repeatedly in this conversation: the widening gap between how fast AI accelerates both attack and defense, and how slowly verification and trust-building processes can move by comparison.
Peer review is functioning as a signal-to-noise filter in an increasingly AI-saturated research pipeline.
