As Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh gears up for the festivities of Mahakumbh Mela 2025, SSP Mahakumbh Mela announced plans for using AI-based technology for crowd management for convenience of devotees.
The Uttar Pradesh Police is set to leverage advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology to manage the massive crowds expected at the Mahakumbh Mela 2025. Known as one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, the Mahakumbh attracts millions of devotees, creating significant logistical and safety challenges for the authorities.
AI-powered systems will play a critical role in monitoring crowd density, predicting congestion hotspots, and ensuring seamless crowd movement across the vast venue. These systems will use surveillance cameras, drones, and other smart devices to analyze real-time data and provide actionable insights. AI tools will also assist in identifying and addressing potential emergencies, enhancing safety for attendees.
Elaborating on the details, SSP Mahakumbh Mela, Rajesh Dwivedi said, "Around 2700 CCTV cameras are being installed in the district and whole fair area. This will help us in crowd management. Cameras with AI features have also been installed in the area. These cameras will automatically send us alerts based on their feed. This step would be in addition to human intelligence. AI is adding to the information of human intelligence. We have already installed 25 police stations in the area and a total 56 stations would be placed."

The integration of AI aims to reduce manual intervention, allowing law enforcement to allocate resources more efficiently. Alongside crowd management, the technology will help in tracking lost individuals, managing entry and exit points, and maintaining law and order during the event.
The fairgrounds are being equipped with 328 AI-enabled cameras, already tested at four key locations, to provide 24/7 crowd monitoring and aid in locating lost individuals. Following directives from the Yogi government, the large-scale installation is nearing completion. A digital 'Khoya-Paaya Kendra' (lost-and-found center), set to launch on December 1, will leverage advanced technology to swiftly reunite separated individuals.
This innovative approach highlights UP Police’s commitment to utilizing technology for public safety and efficient management of large-scale events. With AI at the forefront, Mahakumbh 2025 is poised to set a new benchmark for technology-driven crowd control and event management.
