UPI QR Code Scam: A Growing Digital Threat
As UPI transactions continue to surge across India, cybercriminals are increasingly exploiting QR code-based scams to deceive unsuspecting users. These frauds typically trick victims into authorizing payments while believing they are receiving money.
One of the most common scams involves fraudsters sending a QR code and claiming it is required to receive a refund, prize, payment, or cashback. In reality, scanning the code and entering a UPI PIN results in money being debited from the victim's account.
Another emerging threat is the replacement of genuine merchant QR codes with fake stickers that redirect payments to scammers. Fraudsters also impersonate customer support representatives and use QR codes to steal funds or sensitive banking information.
Consumers must remember a simple rule: a QR code is used to make payments, not receive them. Never share OTPs, UPI PINs, or banking credentials, and always verify beneficiary details before approving transactions.
If targeted, immediately contact your bank, call the cybercrime helpline 1930, and report the incident. Awareness remains the strongest defense against UPI-enabled fraud.
