Legendary Hindi cinema icon Dharmendra died at his Mumbai residence today after a brief period of illness. Tributes poured in from film personalities and national leaders as the industry bid farewell to one of its most enduring stars.
The country’s beloved He-Man, Dharmendra, one of the most influential figures in Indian cinema, passed away today’s morning at his home in Mumbai. He was 89 and had been undergoing treatment for respiratory complications earlier this month. The veteran star’s death comes just days before his 90th birthday, marking the end of a remarkable career that spanned more than six decades and shaped multiple generations of Bollywood storytelling.
The actor’s final rites were held at the Pawan Hans crematorium, where a large contingent of fans and industry colleagues gathered under tight security. Family members, including his wives Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, along with children Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol, were present during the cremation.
Film fraternity and political leaders pay their respects
A long list of prominent Bollywood personalities arrived to offer their condolences, reflecting Dharmendra’s towering influence in the industry. Among those who attended were Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Aamir Khan. Hema Malini, his second wife, was present throughout the ceremony.
Leaders across the political spectrum also expressed their grief. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta were among those who shared heartfelt messages on social media, remembering the actor’s contribution to Indian culture and cinema.
A lasting legacy defined by versatility and stardom
Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol in Punjab’s Ludhiana district, the actor made his debut in 1960 and soon became a household name. Known for his effortless switch between action, romance and comedy, he delivered some of Hindi cinema’s most memorable performances in classics such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Satyakam, Phool Aur Patthar and Yaadon Ki Baaraat. His contributions were recognised with the Padma Bhushan in 2012 and several Filmfare honours.
Dharmendra’s final on-screen appearance will be in Ikkis, a war drama directed by Sriram Raghavan and scheduled for release on December 25, 2025. Even in his late years, he maintained an active presence on social media, sharing glimpses of his love for farming, wellness and simple living.
With his passing, Indian cinema bids farewell to a timeless performer whose warmth, charisma and versatility defined an era.
