Breaking News
WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature for iPhone users that could significantly improve cross-language communication by enabling automatic message translation. The feature, spotted in a recent iOS beta update, is expected to support up to 21 languages in its initial rollout.
According to insights shared by WABetaInfo, the upcoming functionality aims to simplify multilingual conversations by translating messages directly within chats and group conversations. This would eliminate the need for users to manually translate individual messages, making interactions smoother and more accessible.
How the feature is expected to work
The auto-translation option is likely to be integrated into chat settings, allowing users to enable or disable it as needed. Once activated, incoming messages will be automatically translated into the user’s preferred language. Users will also retain control, with the option to view the original message or remove the translated version if required.
The report suggests that translations will be processed locally on the device using APIs provided by Apple. This on-device processing ensures that messages remain protected under WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption framework, as no data would be sent to external servers for translation.
Focus on privacy and offline access
A key aspect of the feature is its privacy-first approach. By relying on on-device processing, WhatsApp aims to maintain the confidentiality of user conversations while delivering real-time translation capabilities. Additionally, users are expected to be able to download language packs, enabling translations to function even without an active internet connection.
Currently, WhatsApp offers a manual translation option, where users must select individual messages and choose a translate function. While effective, this method can be cumbersome when handling multiple messages. The new automated feature is designed to streamline this process and enhance overall user convenience.
Although still under development, the feature highlights WhatsApp’s continued push to make global communication more seamless and inclusive. A wider rollout is expected in a future update, though no official timeline has been confirmed yet.
