WhatsApp users to soon get new image filters and video call backgrounds at a single tap.
WhatsApp is testing a new feature that lets users apply effects to the camera. It is rolling out an exciting update through the Google Play Beta Program, elevating the app to version 2.24.20.20. This update introduces a new feature that allows users to apply effects to their camera, marking a significant enhancement for both photography and video recording. This feature is currently being rolled out to select beta testers.
The new camera backgrounds and filters are accessible from the app’s camera user interface. To use them, open a chat on WhatsApp, tap on the camera button from the bottom bar and tap on the new “wand like” icon. Doing so will open a new screen where you will be able to choose between image filters and video backgrounds.
In addition to basic filters, WhatsApp has introduced a background-changing feature that was once exclusive to video calls. Now, users can replace their real-world backgrounds with virtual scenes or blur them for a cleaner, more polished appearance. For example, if you're in a busy café and want the focus to remain on you, simply blur the background to minimize distractions. This feature is especially useful for professionals looking to share video messages without exposing their surroundings.
In case you are wondering, the new filters and backgrounds can be combined as well as applied separately. WhatsApp also added a new “Low light mode” that can help when taking video calls in low light conditions alongside a “Touch up” mode that can remove blemishes and smoothen your skin.
The new camera effects and filters are currently available for those on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.20.20, but Meta is expected to bring it to the stable channel in the near future.
