Wipro Enterprises is planning to enter semiconductor manufacturing, likely chip assembly. This comes amid big investments by the Tata Group and Murugappa Group, showing how serious India is about becoming a global hub for chips. Wipro's entry could help speed up the country's push for self-reliance in technology. The company is also reportedly building a new printed circuit board (PCB) plant near Bengaluru. The talks are still in an early, exploratory stage.
The company is currently looking for a reliable technology partner, which will be an important factor before moving ahead.
India currently meets about 85% of its PCB demand through imports and the facility will create about 350 jobs. Also, with Wipro Limited's design teams working with partners such as Intel and TSMC, Wipro says it can slash chip design costs by up to 30% using AI.
Wipro Enterprises' move comes while several Indian conglomerates are investing in this fast-growing industry. Recently, HCL began work on a Rs 3,700 crore OSAT facility in Uttar Pradesh with Foxconn. Meanwhile, the Tata Group is building a Rs 27,000 crore OSAT plant in Assam. Similarly, the Murugappa Group's CG Semi has started the first unit of its Rs 7,600 crore OSAT project in Gujarat.
If Wipro enters the race, it could create more opportunities for innovation and jobs, and maybe even put "Made in India" chips inside your next device.
