Alphabet has selected Dixon Technologies, an Indian contract manufacturer, to manufacture Google Pixel 8 smartphones in India. The first batch is anticipated to hit the market by September, and the trial manufacturing phase is now under progress. This action is in line with Google's plan to diversify its supply chain outside of China and take advantage of the expanding smartphone market in India.
The report cited sources as saying that Google plans to use its Indian production to cater to the local market's demands as well as for exports outside the country.
“Dixon has been chosen to make Pixel in India. Trial production is expected to begin soon. Google wants to use India production for catering to needs of the domestic market and potentially for exports as well," the report quoted sources as saying.
The latest move comes after a year-long discussion with various potential manufacturing partners, before finalizing Dixon Technologies. Dixon Technologies is an NSE-listed Indian electronics manufacturing services company, based in Noida.
This development is in line with Google CEO Sundar Pichai's previous statement from October.
Pichai had said, "We shared plans at 'GoogleforIndia' to manufacture Pixel smartphones locally and expect the first device to roll out in 2024. We're committed to being a trusted partner in India's digital growth - appreciate the support for Make In India."
This indicates Google's commitment toward supporting and contributing to India's digital expansion.
