India's satellite communications (SATCOM) sector is poised for explosive growth as regulatory frameworks and licensing processes near completion.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia announced that the domestic SATCOM market is expected to double in size over the next couple of years.
To kickstart this momentum, the government has already issued three SATCOM licenses.
While the Broadband India Forum suggested creating a separate license category for satellite communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia noted that the decision rests entirely with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
Beyond satellite tech, India is aggressively positioning itself as an early mover in the global race for 6G technology.
This proactive stance marks a significant shift from previous telecom generations, where the country lacked an early seat at the table during the rollouts of 4G and 5G.
India is currently collaborating with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on 6G standard and protocol settings.
The ITU has already accepted multiple Indian proposals, including the concept of a "ubiquitous network," which is being tracked via a specialized Gantt chart.
While 6G standards are slated for finalization by 2027–28 with execution targeted for 2030, the immediate focus remains on expanding current infrastructure.
The minister emphasized that the priority today is showcasing and deploying practical 5G use cases.
