The demand for AI-powered laptops is expected to surpass that of desktops, with AI laptops estimated to make up 51% of all laptop shipments by 2025. By 2026, AI laptops are predicted to become the "only choice of laptop available to large businesses, rising from less than 5% in 2023.
AI PC shipments are expected to total 114 million units by 2025, representing a 165.5% increase from 2024, according to a new forecast from Gartner. The AI PC as one, that is equipped with an embedded neural processing unit (NPU), encompassing devices running Windows on Arm, macOS on Arm, and x86 on Windows PCs that feature NPUs.
Additionally, there is a notable shift in computing architectures. While x86-based Windows PCs have traditionally dominated the enterprise landscape, Gartner anticipates a growing share of the AI PC market will be captured by Arm-based architectures.
This trend is particularly significant in the consumer laptop segment, where Arm-based AI machines are expected to increase their market share by 2025. Consequently, businesses will need to reassess their hardware purchasing strategies as more applications become optimized for AI capabilities.

As per Gartner by 2026, AI laptops will be the only choice of laptop available to large businesses, up from less than 5% in 2023.
“As the PC market moves from non-AI PC to AI PC, x-86 dominance will reduce over time, especially in the consumer AI laptop market, as Arm-based AI laptops will grab more share from Windows x86 AI and non-AI laptops. However, in 2025, Windows x86-based AI laptops will lead the business segment.” according to an expert.
