Apple is letting users test a software update that will implant artificial intelligence into its virtual assistant Siri and automate a variety of tedious tasks on the latest iPhone 16.
The free update was rolled out on Thursday for users who have signed up to test Apple's software ahead of the general release planned for next month. All iPhone 16 models are equipped to handle the new technology, which the company calls its Apple Intelligence.
Currently, only the two premium iPhone models from last year feature the enhanced processor necessary for the new AI capabilities. However, this will expand on Friday with the launch of four new iPhone 16 models, all equipped with the required hardware to support these advanced AI features.
All iPhone 16 models, priced from $800 to $1,200, come equipped with the new technology branded as Apple Intelligence. This initiative aims to differentiate Apple's AI offerings from similar features in smartphones released by competitors like Samsung and Google earlier this year. The AI capabilities are being highlighted as a key selling point for the iPhone 16, and the early release of the test version of the software could encourage consumers to purchase the new models sooner.
Currently, the AI technology is available only in US English, with plans to introduce localized English versions for Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK in December. Apple intends to roll out support for additional languages and countries next year. The testing phase for this AI software follows the recent launch of iOS 18 for previous iPhone models.
