Cyberoam has announced the October 2011 Internet threats trend report, prepared in collaboration with its partner, Commtouch. In a key highlight of the report, malware authors targeted Facebook with a range of "friend request" emails to draw recipients into downloading a banking Trojan. Also, the Facebook "like" button was harnessed by advertising scammers to lure users into receiving free merchandise like iPhone 4.
Abhilash Sonwane, Sr. VP, Product Management, Cyberoam said, "Malware authors and scammers of today are well-acquainted with the behavioral psychology of Facebook users. Many of them are intelligent but won't think twice before accepting a friend request from someone they don't know, or responding to random Like requests in the hope of receiving free gifts and gadgets. Cyber-criminals will continue to tweak their attacks on social media based on human weaknesses."
There were also spam attachments utilizing the right-to-left override trick, designed to fool users who do not display or look closely at file extensions in Windows. India continued to remain on top of the world's leading zombie destinations, with Brazil slipping to third position.
