Alike Microsoft, Facebook has plans to leverage on government projects like Digital India, Smart City, Swachh Bharat Mission and others, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Facebook in his visit to India has mentioned it.
Even before visiting India and meeting PM Modi, he indicated his excitement. While addressing media, he said, "I know that he has launched the Digital India initiative and we're very excited about it. India has thousands of villages that don't have access to a mobile network and Narendra Modi is committed to bringing them online. I want to discuss the role Facebook can play in connecting villages and understand Modi’s Digital India vision.”
After Zukerberg’s meeting with PM, he expressed that he is very excited about Digital India project launched by Indian Government and is keen to work with the government in healthcare and education sector. Facebook is planning to extend help in developing the Clean India Mobile App, which is to be launched soon.
Having blocked in China, Facebook is banking a lot on India, the number two market in terms of subscribers. Presently, Facebook’s daily active user base in India is 112 million in comparison to US which is around 184 million.
For the time being, Facebook’s only focus is to increase the daily active user base in India, which will only happen with increase in Internet penetration in the country.
