The partnership highlights Google’s growing focus on specialised AI infrastructure, while giving Marvell a major opportunity to expand its role in custom chip development and deepen its relationship with one of the world’s leading cloud providers.
Google is strengthening its custom silicon strategy through a new partnership with Marvell Technology, as demand for specialised processors continues to rise across the artificial intelligence industry.
Under the agreement, Marvell will work with Google on technologies supporting the development of custom AI chips. The deal also gives Google the option to acquire a significant stake in Marvell, potentially worth about $12.2 billion if fully exercised.
The announcement sent Marvell’s shares nearly 8% higher, reflecting investor optimism over the potential scale of the partnership. The agreement could generate approximately $120 billion in revenue for Marvell through fiscal 2033, provided Google meets the conditions linked to the investment option.
Google’s parent company Alphabet saw limited movement following the announcement, while shares of Broadcom, which has been a major supplier involved in Google’s custom AI chip development, declined by more than 5%.
Google expands its custom AI chip strategy
The partnership covers a broad range of technologies supporting Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and related AI infrastructure. These technologies include components used for processing AI workloads, handling data storage and transferring information across networks.
The increased focus on custom processors comes as technology companies look for alternatives to Nvidia’s high-cost graphics processors. Custom silicon can be designed around specific workloads, potentially improving efficiency and performance for applications such as AI inference, where trained models are executed to produce results.
Google has already invested heavily in its TPU platform as part of its broader AI infrastructure strategy. The company’s continued emphasis on in-house silicon also reflects the growing importance of specialised hardware in supporting large-scale AI services and cloud computing operations.
Under the financial arrangement with Marvell, Google will receive a warrant allowing it to purchase up to 58.97 million Marvell shares at $206.58 each. If fully exercised, the option would be worth approximately $12.18 billion and could make Google Marvell’s fifth-largest investor.
Growing links between AI companies and chip suppliers
The Marvell agreement comes amid a broader trend in which major technology companies are developing increasingly close financial and commercial relationships with semiconductor suppliers.
Recent deals involving companies such as Nvidia and AMD have similarly combined AI chip supply agreements with investment or equity options. These arrangements are emerging as demand for AI computing capacity accelerates and companies compete to secure access to critical hardware and infrastructure.
For Marvell, the Google partnership represents an opportunity to gain a larger share of the expanding custom AI silicon market. Morningstar analyst William Kerwin described the agreement as a significant positive for Marvell, while suggesting that it could represent an expansion of Google’s supplier base rather than a direct replacement of Broadcom.
The development underlines how custom chip design is becoming an increasingly important part of the AI ecosystem, with cloud providers seeking greater control over hardware while semiconductor companies compete for long-term partnerships tied to the rapid expansion of AI workloads.
