Grammarly has announced that it will acquire Superhuman, an email efficiency tool, as part of its plan to build a broader AI-powered productivity suite. Both companies, based in San Francisco, did not share the deal's financial details. Superhuman was last valued at $825 million in 2021 and currently earns around $35 million a year.
This acquisition follows Grammarly’s recent $1 billion funding from General Catalyst, which the company plans to use to develop a range of smart workplace tools. Known for its popular grammar-checking software, Grammarly now has over 40 million daily users and earns more than $700 million annually. It is also planning a name change to reflect its larger ambitions beyond grammar correction.
Superhuman, backed by big investors like IVP and Andreessen Horowitz, has raised over $110 million and built a reputation for making email faster and smarter with the help of AI. According to the company, users send and reply to 72% more emails per hour, and AI-generated emails have increased five times in the last year. However, it faces strong competition from email platforms like Google and Microsoft, which are also adding advanced AI features.
Grammarly CEO Shishir Mehrotra called email “the most used work app” and said it was the logical next step for Grammarly after acquiring startup Coda last year. Coda’s tools helped users with research and collaboration; now, Superhuman will help make email smarter and faster.
Rahul Vohra, CEO of Superhuman, will join Grammarly along with over 100 Superhuman employees. Mehrotra confirmed that Superhuman will keep its product, team, and brand, continuing to serve tens of thousands of loyal users while benefiting from Grammarly’s growing AI ecosystem.
